Information about this assignment (#2: Comparative Visual Mapping of Learning Theories) will be posted on this wiki page after the second Wimba session scheduled on September 19, Wednesday.

Overview

For this assignment, you will explore concept mapping and several web-based applications. Also, you will explore various applications of emerging technologies as well as Web 2.0 tools. In this context, a concept map is "a diagram showing relationships among concepts ... a graphical tool for organizing and representing knowledge." The use of concept-mapping and/or mind-mapping software has been studied and the results argued that it improves "learning/study efficiency up to 15% over conventional note taking."

Instructions

1. In designing your own concept maps, you will explore and learn how to use two web-based visual mapping tools and a presentation tool:

A. Spicy Nodes (http://www.spicynodes.org) is a concept mapping application that can be used to display hierarchical data, "in which a focus node displays detailed information, and the surrounding nodes represent related information (Focus + Context), with a layout based on radial maps."

B. Bubbl.us (https://bubbl.us/) is a Web 2.0 tool that enables users to create mind mapping and brainstorming diagrams online. To begin, the main topic/concept is entered in to the parent bubble. Then ideas and thoughts are recorded in colorful text bubbles linked to the parent bubble. Users continue to add text bubbles which are color coded according to hierarchy.

C. Prezi (http://prezi.com) is a cloud-based presentation software and storytelling tool for exploring and sharing ideas on a virtual canvas. Prezi is distinguished by its Zooming User Interface (ZUI), which enables users to zoom in and out of their presentation media. Prezi allows users to display and navigate through information within a 2.5D space on the Z-axis. Prezi is used as platform for bridging linear and non-linear information, and as a tool for both free-form brainstorming and structured presentation. Text, images, videos and other presentation media are placed upon the canvas, and can be grouped together in frames. Users then designate the relative size and position between all presentation objects and may pan and zoom in and between these objects. For linear presentations, users can construct a prescribed navigation path.

2. So you need to choose three (3) learning theories that you did not use in Assignment One and Discussion Two. Based on your selection, you need to do a comparison using a concept/visual mapping tool (spicy nodes, bubbl.us or prezi). The three learning theoriesshould be compared with each other using at least SEVEN criteria for similarities and/or differences that you have identified. The concept/visual map should have AT LEAST a branch as a criteria and AT LEAST 2-3 sub-branches in each branch. The complexity of the map will be highly regarded. The center of your concept/visual map should be labeled "LEARNING THEORIES" and you can use text, images, video clip, and/or audio. You can be creative with your presentation using different colors, font types and text sizes.

After completing the first visual/concept map, you need to replicate what you have done using another application. So if you used Spicy Nodes to create the first one, then you would choose maybe a Prezi to create a second one.

Finally, do screen captures of your two visual/concept maps and embed them in a word document. Provide a description for each visual/concept map including an introduction as described in the Tips for Writing a Good Introduction. In the conclusion, you need to include a 1-page reflection of what you learned about concepts/visual mapping, your evaluation of both applications, challenges and lessons learned from the completing Assignment Two.
